C.C. Lose, along with Horneman & Erslev, was Denmark's main music publisher in the first three quarters of the 19th century, just as Hansen was in the following 75 years.
The publishing house began as a music shop and publisher established in Copenhagen by French immigrant E. F. J. Haly. In 1802, Haly sold the business to Christian Gottlieb Lose (1745–1817), who continued it under the name C. Lose & Comp. When his son, Carl Christian Lose (1787-1835), come of age in 1814, he took over the company under the name C.C. Lose. After Lose’s death in the summer of 1835, his widow managed the firm together with longtime employee Peter Wilhelm Olsen (1791–1859), operating under the new name C. C. Lose & Olsen.
From 1846, Carl Christian Lose the younger (1821-1892), following his training in Leipzig at Breitkopf & Härtel, took over management of the company together with Otto Hermann Delbanco (1821 -1890), operating under the name C.C. Lose & Delbanco. At that time, Peter Wilhelm Olsen left to establish his own music publishing house. In 1865, Delbanco withdrew from the partnership to found an independent firm, and Lose continued as sole owner under the name C.C. Lose.
In 1871, Lose sold the company to his 24-year-old employee Carl Ferdinand Borchorst (born 1847), who continued the business under the name C.C. Lose (F. Borchorst). In early 1879, Borchorst acquired several other music publishers in Copenhagen, including Oscar Risom, Julius Cohen, and Horneman & Erslev. However, owing to ill health, he sold the whole company to Wilhelm Hansen in June 1879, effectively consolidating music publishing in Denmark under the Wilhelm Hansen name. It is interesting to note that Borchorst continued as a book publisher and was still alive in 1901.
Lose published many works by Friedrich Kuhlau (1820-50, mainly piano) and Hans Christian Lumbye, (Denmark's Johann Strauss), and a few early works by Gade.
